"To win again is a fantastic feeling," Waddock admitted. "I've not experienced it too much since I took over in February.

"But it's something I hope to taste more often with this group of players.

"I want to play a passing game - everyone can see that - and I think the signs are encouraging for the future.

"Dexter and Zesh both had really good games, and some of our football in the first half was outstanding.

"But now we have to learn to maintain that standard for longer periods, not just for 45 minutes but for 60 or 75 minutes.

"You rarely dominate a game for 90 minutes, and Southend are a good team who came back into the game in the second half."

"QPR made life difficult for us in the first half, but we should have scored at least one goal in the second half, because we had the chances.

"We know it's going to be a tough year.

"But the spirit we showed in the second half shows we can compete.

"We are going to need an excellent team spirit and togetherness to get through this season, because there might be times when we lose three or four games on the trot."
