Barry Hayles has rejected the chance to team-up with former boss Ian Holloway at Rangers in favour of a move to Sheffield United.
Hayles (32), joined the Blades today (Wednesday) on a Bosman free transfer after being released by Rangers’ neighbours Fulham this summer.
Ian Holloway went public with his admiration for the striker who left Bristol Rovers whilst Ollie was in charge for a then club-record £2.5 million to join the Cottagers.
Ollie plucked Hayles from non-league Stevenage and moulded him into a dangerous forward thinking striker. Some might say selfish, when well place Hayles would always turn on the acceleration, keep his head down and head towards goal. With strength to battle past the toughest of defenders and pace to frighten even his own team, Hayles left fans, players and team-mates alike in a daze as to what he would do next.
After Fulham had consolidated their position in the Premiership and Hayles’ contract had expired there was no new offer of a deal and the club released him.
Leicester City, Leeds United and Rangers were all keen admirers in the Coca-Cola Championship but despite interest from Premiership sides, Hayles chose to join Sheffield United and completed his deal today.
Rangers will now be turning their attentions elsewhere as Ian Holloway looks to strengthen a squad that maybe capable of surviving in the newly named Championship.
