COACHING REVOLUTION AT LOFTUS ROAD

Last updated : 17 June 2004 By Mark O' Haire

Rangers are set to revolutionise there coaching set-up this summer by NOT appointing an assistant to Ian Holloway (as first reported by QPR MAD).

It seems Ollie will favour a system of coaching which will see a group of coaches in charge of different areas of the pitch.

The club was widely speculated to have appointed a new assistant ahead of pre-season training but speaking to the Hammersmith Times, Ollie made it clear what he intends to do.

He said: "There will be no reserve team manager, but two people designated to look after the players there. If you are position specific, players will improve a lot more quickly.

"The assistant manager's job was always going to frustrate whoever was in it, not just Kenny. This way we will have a fitness coach, keepers, midfielders, and forwards with all players involved at all times, rather than a "them and us" situation with reserves and first-teamers."

Rangers have been without a number two since Kenny Jackett left to take control of Swansea City in mid-March and the R’s boss has been planning this change ever since.

It now looks obvious that Tim Breacker will be moved into a more formal role and be joined by former R’s player Gary Penrice.

Penrice was part of the coaching set-up at Bristol Rovers when Holloway was manager between 1996 and 2001 and Holloway decided to bring him back, although not as his assistant this time.

Breacker will take-over as the new coach in charge of the defence while Penrice will look after the strikers.

The inspiration behind the radical shake-up at Loftus Road was provided by London Wasps RFC who train on the pitch beside Rangers at Acton.

Wasps have a system in place where coaches will control there own designated area with a team manager overseeing proceedings. Hopefully Rangers’ new system will bring about as much success as their rugby counterparts who dominated the silverware in rugby this season.

With Ollie convinced it is the best way forward there can be no complaints as the R’s look forward to teaming up again come the first day in July.

Elsewhere American businessman Tim Krause has until Monday next week to strike a deal with the Rangers board which could see a shake-up in the power relations at Loftus Road.

Krause, president of Milwaukee Wave, the Wisconsin club QPR entered into a partnership agreement with last year, has been discussing a possible investment or takeover for some time.

He recently paid a £100,000 deposit to keep negotiations open and his deadline is Monday, when Rangers will reassess their options if a deal has not been concluded.

Negotiations had stalled and the board has now put a deadline in place in the hope that a deal could be finalised sooner rather than later.
