Lining up opposite him was Cardiff City captain Graham Kavenagh in centre midfield for Ireland and after only 5 minutes Birch showed him what he was all about.
A rough Brich-like tackle ended Kavenagh's game and held up play for four minutes so he could be treated. It was the Bluebirds' skipper fourth international cap and first for two years.
Birch, sporting his blue and white mohican clearly showed no remorse and continued his game with a job well done. Robbie Keane and Matt Holland also felt the force of the super hoop.
