Assitant to be named

Last updated : 14 June 2004 By Mark O' Haire

Ollie is looking to recruit a new assistant manager after Kenny Jackett’s departure to Swansea City in March. Jackett is now in full-time charge of the 3rd division club leaving the position vacant at Loftus Road.

There have been 3 names branded around as possible new assistants but still no comment by the club on who they maybe. This leaves us having to speculate about personnel. After all, training begins again on July 1st so Ollie will have to move fast to secure the man he wants.

Tim Breacker, Gary Penrice and Keith Curle are thought to be the names in the running.

Breacker has been at Rangers for nearly 5 years since joining as a player from West Ham. After a couple of determined displays at the end of his career he decided to hang his boots up and concentrate on coaching. He was appointed reserve team manager and has been in control of that position ever since. He is however a very well respected member of the R’s coaching set up and Holloway may now see him as the right man to take over Jackett’s role after gaining the necessary experience.

Penrice is a close friend of Holloway’s since there playing days. A Bristol born man he lined up alongside Ollie at Rovers and Rangers where he spent 4 years playing. He made 96 appearances for Rangers scoring 25 goals in a successful stint in West London. There relationship continued when Penrice linked up again, this time as Holloway’s number 2 at Rovers after he was named manager.

The pair worked well together at the Memorial Stadium for three years until they went there separate ways. Penrice out of the game and Holloway as the new Rangers boss. Penrice is high on Holloway’s wish list, the only stumbling block maybe trying to get him to up sticks from his home-town of Bristol.

Keith Curle is currently manager of 3rd division Mansfield Town. Appointed 18 months ago, Curle suffered relegation in his first half season in charge. This season however was well improved as the Stags looked to bounce back to the 2nd division only to be denied by defeat on penalties in the playoff final against Huddersfield.

Curle has picked up many admirers as a football manager and coach and is a close friend of Holloway’s. It is also thought that he finds being in full-time charge of the club very difficult to cope with and may opt to return as a number 2.

My personal favourite to take over would be Gary Penrice leaving Timmy Breacker as a 1st team coach but what Ollie is thinking is hard to tell. Any mover for Curle is unlikely as the R’s would have to compensate Mansfield for stealing there boss, that involves money which would sour the idea to the Rangers hierarchy.

There is plenty to be decided as we enter the latter part of June. No new faces are yet to arrive, Lee Cook is expected to be the first and that deal should be close to being finalised in the next fortnight. Richard Johnson, Richard Edghill and Matthew Rose are yet to sign a new deal at the club and England were defeated by the magic of the greatest footballer on the planet.

The summer is now in motion with results still being expected, lets just hope all is cleared up come July.
