Plymouth Argyle manager Paul Sturrock is leaving the Devon-based club to furtehr his career and manager Southampton in the near future.
A clause in his contract allowed him to speak to any Premiership club who became interested. Sturrock has taken up the option and had preliminary talks with the South-coast club.
Sturrock began his managerial career at St Johnstone and won promotion before a short spell at Dundee United.
He was a suprise choice as the new boss of Argyle in 2000 and helped fight of relegation in his first season with a comfortable finish in 12th place.
In the last two seasons Sturrock has guided Argyle up the league ladder after a 3rd Division championship and a consolidate position last season.
This year Argyle have set the league on fire with goals galore and a hard working squad. They currently head the division from the chasing Bristol City and QPR.
Rangers will be keen to capitalise on the iminent departure of Sturrock after a confidence-boosting win at home to playoff contenders Port Vale on Tuesday evening. Bristol City have also began to falter in recent weeks after an unbelivable winning run.
The stage has been set for Rangers to take both west-country sides to the cleaners in the coming weeks. The R's visit both clubs in their final 12 games. Anything is possible, but with the return to scoring form of former Royal Jamie Cureton, the two pace setters may begin to feel the heat.
Next up for Rangers is a home game with Oldham Athletic on Saturday and another 3 points will be a great boost in the push for promotion. The R's were beaten by Athletic eariler in the season and it will be a first trip back to London since the Lancashire club were defeated in the playoff semi-finals by teh R's last season-it promises to be an all-action manifesto.
