QPR 5 Blackpool 0

QPR found a new hero in the shape of Gareth Ainsworth as they thumped Blackpool 5-0 in a stunning open-day performance.

Former Wimbledon and Cardiff winger Ainsworth scored two goals on his debut at Loftus Road with Kevin Gallen, Richard Langley and Steve Palmer also netting.

It was a miserable day for Blackpool, who also had Richie Wellens sent off in the last minute for his second bookable offence.

Ainsworth begun the match by whipping the crowd into a pre-kick-off frenzy and lived up to his hype by scoring after only four minutes, turning in a Gino Padula corner at the far post.

It was 2-0 two minutes before the break when Langley turned home a Gallen cross after Phil Barnes had made a miraculous save from Paul Furlong.

Gallen then made it 3-0 when the unlucky Mike Flynn slid in to win the ball but saw it cannon off the QPR striker and into the net.

Ainsworth produced an individual special for 4-0 and Steve Palmer rounded things off with a header in the last minute.

But it was Ainsworth who was the hero.

QPR boss Ian Holloway said: "Gareth can become a fans favourite and we have a fair few here that have the potential to be QPR legends in the future.

"That's what I want. It's all very nice to look in the past but we had five pictures of Les Ferdinand in our programme today. Well, I love Les and he is a great guy. But we have got to stop looking backwards.

"I want to build a team here that people remember." Judging by this performance Rangers may well be on the way, but for Blackpool boss Steve McMahon it was a nightmare afternoon.

"We were poor all round, it was a bad, bad team performance," said McMahon.

"It was a wake up call for some of the lads who have come here from Premiership clubs.

"You expect fancy touches from them but you expect good decisions as well, and we didn't get them.

"It was a case of welcome to the real world for them and they will have to learn quickly."
