Paul Furlong ensured QPR go into the play-offs on a high when he prodded home a 52nd minute winner on the final day of the regular season at mid-table Colchester.

Furlong was initially unlucky to see his header from Stephen Kelly's cross thud off the far post and bounce back into play. However, the marksman was in the right place to bury the rebound.

QPR were already assured of a play off spot before kick-off but this win will give them home advantage in the second leg of their semi-final play off tie against Oldham.

Colchester went within inches of claiming a point from the game when substitute Ben May headed against the underside of the bar within four minutes of his introduction.

The U's started the match brightly but could not find a way past keeper Chris Day, who made one particularly find save to beat away a 25-yard lob from French ace Richard Pacquette.

After a lively first half-hour the U's faded a little, Rangers dictating the match from their on in.

The game marked a special occasion for veteran Mick Stockwell, who came on as a 56th minute substitute to make the 758th and final appearance of his career.

Stockwell enjoyed a standing ovation from U's supporters and after the match he said, "My body said that it was time to retire, although it was a very emotional occasion.

"I have really enjoyed my career as a player, and I still think I have something to give back to the players. I want to go into coaching next season, although I am not sure where."
