Waddock disappointed as Rangers prop up Championship

QPR sit at the bottom of the Championship after a disappointing defeat at Burnley.

Rangers summer target Steve Jones scored both goals for the Clarets leaving Waddock wondering what might have been.

"Jones was one I wanted during the summer and he showed his quality with the goal he scored.

"We made contact, there were a lot clubs after him and we were one of them."

Waddock was disappointed with the manner in which the first goal was conceded, adding: "It was a poor goal to give away, to concede a goal like that meant we shot ourselves in the foot.

"We don't get goals like that, we have to work really hard to break teams down, so it's frustrating.

"Jones scored a fantastic second but would that have come if we didn't concede the first? Who knows?"

The 2-0 victory at Turf Moor was matched by Luton and West Brom but Steve Cotterill's men were at the top of the table on alphabetical order.

And the Clarets boss said: "I might go home and freeze teletext.

"The second goal was fantastic but the first came from looking for an opportunity, it could have ended up rolling out of play but they went looking for the opportunity and it was a nice side-footed finish.

"He does strike a good ball and he's a good option for us. He got his lucky break today, Andy Gray didn't get his break for a lot of unselfish work but on another day he'll get it."

Cotterill added: "The first game of the season is always an awkward one, you don't get to see the opposition much in pre-season, so it is a lottery.

"It's not something we'll get carried away with - but we'll enjoy the day.

"I said at half-time that patience was the key, simply because of their formation, I thought in the end our fitness might show through, which was the case in the end."
