Talking point: Were the fans right to boo Gavin Mahon?

Last updated : 22 February 2009 By Liam Osborne
Gavin Mahon had an absolute shocker against Ipswich and as the club's captain he should be the first to admit that.

But whether or not his cause was helped by the sound of discontent home fans booing his every touch, is entirely another issue.

The topic of booing has been widely debated in recent months, following the Arsenal faithful's treatment of Emmanuel Eboue during their home game against Wigan in December.

Supporters will argue that having paid for a ticket, they are entitled to voice their frustrations however they see fit, but those who sympathise believe it can only crush a player's confidence and therefore serve no meaningful purpose.

It's an issue that makes for divided opinion among supporters, managers and players and will no doubt continue to do so.

A minority of the Rangers fans are always very quick to get on the players' backs, but the typically small section of fans seemed to be at a record high on saturday evening.
