Rangers were keen on signing the Indian international striker but the British government only allow clubs to sign non-European Union players if their country is amongst the top seventy teams in the world rankings.

India are currently ranked 156th in the World rankings hence the refusal of a work permit for the 25-year-old striker who currently plays for Goa-based side Dempo SC.

"It's not the end of the world," Chetri has said.

"I will still continue to work hard for my country and my club Dempo, who have been very supportive."
