Plastic bottles, coins and matchday programmes were among the items hurled and Branislav Ivanovic was struck by a cigarette lighter as Chelsea celebrated Cesc Fabregas' 88th-minute winner.
The FA will wait for referee Andre Marriner's report before deciding whether to take action but QPR could be hit with a fine as punishment for failing to control their fans.
Rangers manager Chris Ramsey said: "We don't want any objects thrown on the pitch.
"We know the hostilities between fans can sometimes go too far and if that is the case we'd like to make sure that's not somebody who is encouraged to come back into the club."
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made light of the unsavoury incident, insisting the game was conducted in the "correct" manner on and off the pitch.
"The game was correct on the pitch and in the stands," Mourinho said.
"If at the end of the game somebody threw a pound, put the pound in your pocket and go

No problem.
"Do my players need a pound? Everyone needs a pound
Never throw a pound away."
The win saw Chelsea restore their seven-point lead at the top of the table while QPR remain in the relegation zone, two points adrift of safety.
Fabregas' strike was the Blues' only shot on target during a disappointing West London derby, which QPR could have won had Thibaut Courtois not denied Matt Phillips' close-range effort in the second half.
"Were we fortunate? Yes
It was a typical game for 0-0," Mourinho said.
"We played well in the circumstances
We didn't play better because they did their job very, very well.
"Every time I've been a champion, I remember a couple of matches my team won in the last minute.
"It is like a little light that shines for the team who are going to be champions."
The victory deals another blow to the fading hopes of the chasing pack, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City all trying to close the gap on the league leaders.
Chelsea have been joint top or top of the table since the opening day of the season and are on course to break Manchester United's 1993-94 record of 262 consecutive days at the summit.
"I don't know if it hurts them (our rivals) or not, what I know is it's not normal to be top of the league since day one," Mourinho said.
"A team who arrives in August and is top of the league every day until April - that is the team that deserves the credit.
"We have had a good run since day one so nobody should be disappointed because we have been on a good run since August
Now we need 11 more points (to win the title)."
