Post match reaction to FA Cup stalemate

The FA Cup third-round tie at Loftus Road was not much of a spectacle as Burnley were unable to extend their knack for beating London clubs in cup competitions this season against QPR.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, on a scouting mission ahead of Tuesday's semi-final, must have wondered how Premier League rivals Fulham, Chelsea and Arsenal succumbed to the Clarets this season.

But Coyle's side were hit by injuries and suspensions and could not even fill the substitutes' bench.

Christian Kalvenes made his first appearance since the end of October while Joey Gudjonsson and Steven Thompson were also recalled.

After finishing 2008 with 2-1 defeats by Barnsley and Doncaster in the Coca-Cola Championship, Coyle was pleased with the way his side began the new year in the cup.

"It was important to get a positive result going into the Tottenham game after the two defeats over Christmas because football is about confidence," Coyle said.

"We have kept a clean sheet, which is pleasing, but we can play better and we will have to be at our best on Tuesday night against a very good side.

"Tottenham obviously have better players, but what I do know is that my players will give me absolutely everything."

Coyle added: "It was a hard-fought game against QPR and both sides had lots of energy.

"QPR away is a difficult game anyway, but we only had a 17-man squad because of the injuries and suspensions so I was pleased to see us bounce back from the two defeats over Christmas.

"As I have said, we can play a lot better but, taking everything into account, I was pleased and we are still in the draw for the next round, which is the important thing."

QPR boss Paulo Sousa, making his managerial debut in the FA Cup, criticised the referee for failing to spot an alleged elbow by Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle on substitute Emmanuel Ledesma in the second half.

"I don't like to talk about the referee but I don't think he helped us. It was a one-on-one challenge and everyone else saw it except the referee," said the Portuguese.

"This kind of thing must be stopped in the game because you can hurt somebody like that. He must be protected, he is a player as well as a human being."

Sousa added: "It was a tough game. Burnley played very well but we can be much better. We controlled the game but we didn't create many chances."

The replay at Turf Moor is scheduled to take place on January 13.
