Peace Talks

THE long-running and often bitter dispute between former QPR chairman Chris Wright and the current board at Loftus Road may finally be resolved in the next couple of weeks.

It seemed that a deal to buy Wright's remaining shares in the club had been agreed between the two factions before Christmas, but he changed his mind last week, going on to criticise the QPR board saying that he had no talks with them at all.

His backtrack came on the same day that a consortium bid fronted by Ross Jones - a former board member at Loftus Road at the same time as Wright - was dismissed as 'laughable' by current chairman Bill Power.

However, Power thinks the misunderstanding has been sorted out.

"Technically Chris was right," revealed Power. "He hadn't spoken to me or to Gianni Paladini, but there were talks with our non-executive director Kevin McGrath, and that was where we thought the deal was thrashed out before Christmas.

"We have been in contact with Chris and the talks were quite affable and we have now sent him a formal offer for his shares. He is away on business for a couple of weeks but hopefully on his return it will all be sorted out."

The deal will see Wright sell his 14.9 per cent stake in the club for the full price, but he will then give back 50 per cent of the money in cash.

One deal that looks doomed to failure though is the latest consortium bid to take control of the club.

Power dismissed their bid when it was first made and he has heard nothing new to convince him about it since.

"I certainly don't want to sound like we are Nick Blackburn and David Davies, God forbid, but both myself and Gianni have always said that if someone comes in with the right money and with the same desire as we have for this club, then they can come down and buy it this afternoon and make themselves chairman at the same time," confirmed Power.

"But they will have to find a way to pay off the £10million loan we have and they will have to pay me the going rate for my shares, and that is just not being offered at the moment.

"I can't see any future in it at all. They offered £2.5million for control but that is just a drop in the ocean. Why didn't these people come in last year with their money? Then there wouldn't have been a Gianni Paladini here at all.

"The trouble is they knew they were throwing good money after bad then, whereas now we are turning things round - this club is a lot more valuable than it was last year that's for sure."

Another feather in the QPR board's cap is securing manager Ian Holloway on a new three-and-a-half-year contract, a deal that has delighted the chairman. He said: "I can't describe how well things are going between Ian and the board, it is a marvellous relationship.

"How many football managers would ring you up worried about your health because you weigh too much?

"I think that is what he meant anyway, he phoned, shouted 'you fat b*****d' and put the phone down again!

"The relationship could not be better despite people saying otherwise when we were having our recent losing run.

"We tell him everything and he does the same and if he asks for something that we don't think is right then we tell him so.

"We had a rough start and we had a few set-twos, but the last two or three months have been superb. I have never seen the spirit of everyone at the club so high. The players all think they are going to get into the play-offs."

One man they are likely to have to do without for that bid is loan Ranger Andrew Davies, who looks set to be recalled by Middlesbrough following Saturday's home game with Preston North End.

The 20-year-old centre back has impressed since arriving but Boro boss Steve McLaren seems keen for him to return to the Riverside next week.

Meanwhile, Kevin McLeod has turned down a move to Chester City after the League Two Club bid £100,000 for the winger.

Power said: "I am amazed they had that sort of money to spend, but we have always said that Kevin is needed here, and we have offered him a new contract. I think and hope he is happy here."
