Luton Town Preview

Last updated : 19 January 2006 By Mark O' Haire
Marc Nygaard returned unscathed to training on Thursday but will not be risked as he lacks fitness from his time on the sidelines. The giant striker who has impressed since signing is likely to return to the squad to play Leicester on the 31st January. Martin Rowlands is also targeting his return for the home fixture against the Foxes and will miss the trip to Kenilworth Road. Georges Santos has recovered quickly to his damaged ankle suffered in last weekends victory and will have a fitness test on Friday morning to determine whether he will be able to play a part. Matthew Rose has recovered from a knock in the same fixture and is expected to take up his position in defence without any problems. Should Santos miss out, Rose may partner Danny Shittu in central defence allowing Mauro Milanese to fill the left-back position. Another option is to use Andy Taylor who could make a full debut after coming on as a substitute against the Saints, should Ian Holloway decide to choose youth over experience. Elsewhere Marc Bircham and Kevin Gallen remain on the treatment table for the foreseeable future. Gallen needs nerve conduction testing to evaluate his neutral system. The Rangers medical team cannot find out the problem which has kept the skipper out of action for over two months. Bircham meanwhile will be reviewed by his orthopaedic consultant with regards to his ongoing problem. They will be joined in the medical room by fellow casualties Tommy Doherty, Jake Cole, Dominic Shimmin and Matthew Hislop. With regards to our visitors, they’re biggest worry is hanging over star striker Steve Howard. The 29-year old striker who has hit the net 10 times this season picked up an ankle injury during the Hatters 2-1 defeat to Wolves last week and is rated doubtful. Howard has been unable to train this week and may vacate his striking role for bustling young striker Enoch Showunmi or Warren Feeney, both of whom are standing by to take his place. After an impressive start to the season the Hatters have only won once out of the last nine league and cup games. Luton had been in the top six of the league for most of the season after winning the League One title at a canter last year but are currently embroiled in their worst run for quite some time. They sit only one position below the Hoops and still harbour realistic playoff dreams but it could be their away form that lets them down. They have picked up 13 points from a possible 45 on the road which also included a 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road in early September. However their home form has been much more impressive winning 7 of their 14 fixtures at Kenilworth Road, only being beaten three times. Last Time Out: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Luton Town (13/1/06) Luton: Beresford, Edwards, Coyne, Heikkinen, Underwood, Brkovic, Nicholls (C), Foley, Showunmi, Howard, Vine (Feeney 64). Subs Not Used: Brill, Barnett, Morgan, Bell. It promises to be an excellent fixture and let's hope the travelling 700 Rangers fans have plenty to shout about come 5pm on Saturday evening.
