Langley Returning Home?

Last updated : 13 July 2004 By Mark O' Haire

Rumours are growing that former Rangers favourite Richard Langley is on the verge of a return to Loftus Road- as early as tomorrow morning according to some reports.

Langers left Rangers last August in a £250,000 deal to join Cardiff City. Rangers Chairman and Board (David Davies, Nick Blackburn & Co.) said at the time of his departure it was down to financial reasons. Langley was out of contract this June and the Board favoured a sale rather than to risk losing the player on a free. The player had made no secret of his desire to play at a higher level, ideally with Rangers.

Since his move to Wales Langers has not had the best of times. He started his Cardiff career off brightly until a poor run of form saw him highlighted by the famous Bluebirds’ Boo Boys in early January.

Reports have suggested that he has not returned to Cardiff since being given an extended break due to his international excursions with Jamaica this summer, and with the Bluebirds deep in debt and still owing Rangers money- a deal may be settled tomorrow that will see Langers back in the blue and white of Rangers.

Cardiff are thought to be as much as £23 million in debt and were unable to play certain players in games last season in fear of having to pay them bonuses over appearance related pay. Banks are now not offering to sanction any deals to sign players until they reduce the wage bill and offload some of their more saleable assets.

Robert Earnshaw and Daniel Gabbidon are most at risk but with Langers on a lucrative deal and already unsettled in Cardiff, the Bluebirds are said to have spoken to the new Rangers board about a possible deal.

Cardiff stayed in the 1st Division last season, triggering the second payment in the Langley deal of £125,000 to be paid, but the club have failed to pay Rangers and any deal is likely to be set on that payment.

It is a complicated episode in the Richard Langley saga, which dragged on for over a year before his eventual departure.

Langers always stated his love for the club and although some supporters pointed fingers at a poor relationship between player and manager (Ian Holloway), both individuals have always expressed the respect they have for each other.

Despite setting his base in the Welsh capital, Langers spends most of his time in London, popping back to see Rangers games as much as possible and still keeps in touch with the majority of the squad. Some reports have also said that Holloway has invited him back to train with the squad whenever possible.

QPR MAD will bring you the latest regarding a return for Richard Langley as and when we hear it.
