COOK TO WEST BROM?

Last updated : 04 July 2005 By Mark O' Haire
The Premiership club’s manager Bryan Robson supposedly faxed Rangers chairman Bill Power asking if the winger was available for a transfer with a fee of £400,000 mentioned.

Power immediately rejected the proposal and warned the Baggies not to bother again as Cook was not for sale at any price.

After Ian Holloway admitted to TalkSport that Rangers’ debt had now been cleared, the club do not need the money from the transfer and are keen to keep stars like Cook at the club and continue moving forward.

However, Holloway has been in touch with the Midlands club since then, not to offer Cook but to enquire himself about the availability of defender Darren Purse and midfielder Jason Koumas.

Both players have been targets of cash-strapped Cardiff and are available for knockdown fees, easily affordable for Rangers.

The stumbling block would be the wages of Welsh international Koumas and with various other Championship sides including Wolves, Ipswich and Norwich interested, any deal seems unlikely.

Elsewhere, some reports are suggesting the club made a move to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Kris Commons.

Following Forest’s relegation the club are looking to cut costs and Commons (despite being a Forest fan) is looking to move away and play at a higher level.

Tottenham Hotspur were known admirers of the youngster last season but decided against a move after the City Ground club quoted £1million as an asking price.

Ian Holloway was very impressed with the player when Rangers met Forest three times last season and is believed to ask about the player’s availability.

Forest refused to put a price on the player and after speaking to directors at Loftus Road, Holloway decided against a move.

Commons is still on Ollie’s list and should West Brom come back with a higher concrete offer for Lee Cook, Commons could be a ready made replacement at Loftus Road.

MAD RUMOUR RATING- 3/10

West Brom are highly unlikely to come after Lee Cook just yet and if they do, Rangers cannot afford Kris Commons.

However, despite not saying so, the club can afford to accommodate Darren Purse and maybe even Jason Koumas should moves to Cardiff breakdown. After all if the Welsh side can in their position, surely we can too?
