Sousa should be left to his own devices

On Saturday, the season finally petered out for Rangers. Ten points adrift of the play-offs, now the same number clear of the drop-zone.

They've been fantastic on the odd ocassion, mostly mediocre and recently quite poor, which is why the club's current position is one they deserve and more likely than not, will occupy come the end of the season.

Saturday's result was typical of the past six months. No goal for a staggering 18th game, and a 9th goalless draw. Briatore must be scratching his head, wondering what he needs to do.

Well, he should start by spending more and spending more wisely, which means putting his trust in the manager's decisions. Did Dowie sign Ledesma, Parejo and Tomassi? Has anyone arrived at the club since Sousa took charge, because as the manager, he decided they should? Can pigs fly?

The problem is, if Dowie was sacked after 12 games and 18 points, what hope does Sousa have come the end of the season? His points per game ratio is worse and if you believe what you read, then he needs to win most of his remaining eight games to stand a chance of avoiding the sack.

If Dowie was sacked because the board were unhappy with the football he was producing, then why should they feel any different about the way things are going now?

That's not to say Paulo deserves the boot. He deserves more time and a fair crap at the whip with a full squad to select from at the start of next season. Unfortunately, whether or not he gets that appears worryingly uncertain.
